Andriy Shalennyy is a trainee with our firm, with a strong focus on logistics agreements, commodities (in particular Liquified Natural Gas) and decarbonisation of shipping.

Andriy has wide-ranging experience advising on logistics agreements, including ocean and air freight.

Andriy is versed in various aspects of LNG trade. He was part of a FZ team that advised on a major long-term LNG sale and purchase agreement. He has also assisted multiple LNG trading houses with chartering LNG tonnage. Andriy is particularly passionate about price review clauses in LNG SPAs, having completed his LLB dissertation on that topic.

Andriy is knowledgeable in intricate transactional and regulatory aspects of EU ETS and MARPOL Regulations. Andriy has drafted numerous bespoke and house decarbonisation charterparty provisions. Andriy has presented on EU ETS to P&I Clubs and LNG trading houses.

Andriy works in English (fluent), as well as in Ukrainian (native) and Russian (native).

Highlights of Andriy’s work include the following:

  • Assisted a partner in the preparation of house ocean and air freight terms for a household name shipping company.
  • Preparation of bespoke charterparty provisions for vessel owners and charterers in the LNG industry. Advising on the terms of ShellLNGTime 2.
  • Part of a team advising a major shipping company on its right to impose container surcharges over Red Sea diversions under multiple bespoke freight agreements.
  • Assisted a partner in advising a leading shipping line on the regulatory and contractual implications of shipping decarbonisation legislation, including EU ETS and MARPOL Annex VI (CII, EEXI and EEDI).
  • Preparation of bespoke EU ETS, CII and EEXI charterparty provisions for several LNG trading houses.
  • Advised an Asian LNG trading house on setting up an EU ETS trading account.
  • Advised a major LNG supplier on the implications of a ‘No Crew Change’ Clause under a time charterparty from the perspective of the SOLAS, STCW and Maritime Labour Conventions.
  • Assisted a team in the preparation of a shipbuilding contract for a general cargo carrier.
  • Assisted a team in the representation of a major European energy company in the negotiation of a long-term LNG sale and purchase agreement.
  • Advised multiple clients on UK and EU sanctions issues relating to the individual and sectoral sanctions against Russia.

    US Sanctions Update – Russian LNG Shadow Fleet

    On 23 August 2024, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (“OFAC”) announced sanctions against seven LNG carriers reportedly comprising a new Russian shadow fleet, designating them as US specially designated nationals (“SDNs”).[1] According to satellite imagery and ship tracking data, at least three of these ships are confirmed to have loaded LNG at Novatek’s sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 facility. The other four ships have been used to deliver volumes from non-sanctioned Yamal LNG, but were originally intended for use with Arctic LNG 2.
